Can Your EV Power Your House During an Outage?

Bidirectional charging is real, it is limited, and it needs specific equipment. A plain-English look at what works today.

What Bidirectional Charging Means

Most chargers only move power one way, from the house into the car. Bidirectional systems can also send it back.

  • Vehicle-to-home (V2H) powers the house from the car during an outage
  • It needs a compatible vehicle, a bidirectional charger and a transfer system
  • The utility has to approve how the system connects to the grid

A typical EV battery holds several days of essential household use, which is why V2H is getting so much attention.

It Is More Than a Charger

The transfer equipment is the important part.

During an outage, the house has to be safely disconnected from the grid before the car can power it. That is the job of the transfer switch or backup gateway, and it is what makes V2H an electrical project rather than a charger swap.

Many systems back up selected circuits, such as the refrigerator, lights and internet, rather than the whole house.

Choosing those circuits is part of the design. Keeping the backup load small means the car’s battery lasts longer, and it keeps the transfer equipment and the panel work simpler and less expensive.

Is Your Car Compatible?

Compatibility is still limited and varies by model year, so check before buying equipment. Some vehicles support V2H today, others only support powering tools or appliances from the car directly.

Planning Ahead

If V2H is likely in the next few years, the panel, conduit and charger location can be planned for it now, which saves reopening walls later. Tell us your vehicle and what you would want to keep running, and we will map out the options.
